Step 1 — fly to Addis Ababa
Bole International (ADD) is the hub of African aviation and Ethiopian Airlines flies there from almost everywhere. Most visitors need an e-visa, which is applied for online in advance; check the current requirements for your nationality before booking. Addis sits at 2,350 m, so expect a cool first night and mild altitude effects.
Step 2 — pick your gateway: Mekelle or Semera
This is the choice that shapes your whole trip. Both are about an hour’s flight from Addis Ababa, and both have operators running into the depression — but they approach it from opposite sides.

Step 3 — the drive in
From either gateway the road eventually stops being a road. The Mekelle route descends the escarpment through Berhale in a dramatic series of switchbacks, dropping 2,300 m in a few hours; the Semera route runs flatter and hotter across lava fields. Both finish on rough tracks where only a 4x4 will do, which is one reason independent travel is not permitted.
Permits, escorts and why you cannot go alone
The Danakil sits on a sensitive border region and on Afar community land. Every visitor needs permits arranged through a licensed operator, a local Afar guide, and in most cases an official police or militia escort. This is not an upsell — it is a long-standing legal requirement, and no reputable operator will take you without it.
- Permits and escort fees are normally bundled into the tour price — confirm before you book.
- Carry your passport: there are checkpoints on the way in and out.
- Check your government’s current travel advice for Ethiopia and the Afar Region before committing.
- Travel insurance for Ethiopia should explicitly cover remote-area travel and volcano visits.
Overland from Addis Ababa
It is possible to drive the 580 km Addis Ababa–Semera highway instead of flying, and it is paved the whole way. The advantage is Awash National Park, which sits directly on the route and is the only greenery you will see. The disadvantage is a full day each way that you could have spent in the desert.
