The Danakil is compact on a map and enormous in practice — a day’s driving separates the lava lake from the salt flats. Here is every place worth the fuel, what it is actually like, and which expeditions include it.
Almost every itinerary is built from the same four or five stops. Understanding what each one is before you book is the single best way to choose between operators — a cheap trip that skips Erta Ale is not a bargain if the volcano was the reason you came.

A blinding white plain left by an evaporated arm of the Red Sea. Afar workers still lever slabs of salt free with wooden poles, shape them by axe and load them onto camel caravans bound for the highlands — a trade at least a thousand years old.

Also called Lake Giulietti, this hypersaline lake sits about 100 m below sea level and is fed by hot springs. The water is so dense you cannot sink — most Danakil itineraries stop here for a float and a freshwater rinse.

The purpose-built regional capital sits on the Addis–Djibouti corridor with its own airport, and has become the main alternative approach to the Danakil. From here you reach Lake Afrera and Erta Ale without crossing Tigray at all.

Where the Awash river carves a gorge before vanishing into the Danakil’s closed basin. Doum palms, hot springs and a waterfall support oryx, kudu, baboons and over 450 bird species — the natural counterpoint to the salt and lava.

In 1974 a hillside in the Afar badlands gave up “Lucy” — a 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis skeleton that rewrote human origins. The fossil beds are protected; the skeleton itself is displayed in Addis Ababa.
