In November 1974, in the eroded badlands of Hadar in the Afar Region, a team led by Donald Johanson found a few fragments of arm bone and then, over the following weeks, several hundred pieces of a single skeleton. It was about 40% complete — extraordinary for a hominin that old — and it was 3.2 million years old. The team called her Lucy, after the Beatles song playing in camp; in Amharic she is Dinkinesh, “you are marvellous”.

Lucy is an Australopithecus afarensis, a species that walked upright on legs like ours but kept a brain the size of a chimpanzee’s. She settled a long argument about human origins by demonstrating that bipedalism came first and big brains came later. The wider Afar region has since produced Ardi, Selam and other finds, making these dusty gullies one of the most important palaeoanthropological landscapes on Earth.

  • Hadar lies in the Afar Region north of the Awash river, off the Addis Ababa–Semera corridor. There is no visitor infrastructure, and active research areas are restricted.
  • The realistic way to “visit Lucy” is the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa — central, cheap and open daily.
  • Some longer Afar and Danakil itineraries include an interpretive stop in the Awash valley; check the day-by-day before booking if this matters to you.
Insider tips
  • Expect a cast, not the original. Lucy’s actual bones are kept in a vault for conservation, and this is standard practice for fossils of this importance worldwide.
  • Give the museum a proper hour. The hominin gallery is the highlight, but the ethnographic and regalia collections upstairs are also very good.

Can you visit the place where Lucy was found?

Not as a normal tourist stop. Hadar is a working research area with no visitor facilities and restricted access. The Lower Valley of the Awash is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the fossils themselves are studied and displayed in Addis Ababa.
